Biodegradable Plates, Sugarcane and Bagasse Explained

Friday, January 12th, 2018

Biodegradable paper platesWe’re commonly asked for more information on our popular range of Sugarcane items, what they’re made from, what they feel like, why they’re biodegradable etc. Our entire line of Sugarcane products are made from a substance called Bagasse; this is a by-product of crushed sugarcane and has traditionally been considered a waste product. For every 10 tonnes of sugarcane produced, there is around 3 tonnes of waste Bagasse, this can now be pressed and pulped into biodegradable board products such as plates and bowls.

Bagasse has fantastic eco-friendly credentials; its production has no additional impact on natural resources and is 100% compostable + biodegradable. It requires no additional plastic coating, which has traditionally been an issue with the more common PE (polyethylene)  coated paperboard style of plate. As the sugarcane plates are a 100% natural composition, they will naturally break down over time, they’re completely compostable.

In terms of the product itself, it’s best described as a matte-effect heavyweight card material in texture, much thicker than a standard disposable plate and feels more substantial. It’s a highly rigid product, making it very well suited to scenarios which call for a disposable plate or bowl, but also require a premium and more heavyweight product. We always recommend a sugarcane / Bagasse product where the customer intends to serve meal sized quantities of hot / oily foods for example.

We stock a whole range of items in this material including:-

  • Round plates (6, 7, 9 and 10” sizes)
  • Square plates (15, 20 and 26cm sizes)
  • Bowls (12 and 16oz sizes)
  • Food containers (Various sizes)

All these items can be safely used in the microwave; they can even be refrigerated and frozen making them a great choice for environmentally friendly takeaway use.

We’re always happy to answer any questions you may have on this or any other range we stock, simply get in touch for more information. You can see our range of biodegradable plates and other tableware at: http://www.eventsupplies.co.uk/product_listing,38,0,Biodegradable_Tableware.html

Bagasse / Sugarcane Tableware – as seen on TV!

Thursday, December 20th, 2012

Eagle eyed customers may have noticed our Sugarcane bowls featured on Heston’s Fantastical Food – aired on Channel 4 on December 19th. The show featured a gigantic Christmas pudding, so much so that it was large enough to step inside!

The plus-sized pudding was served to a large crowd of onlookers in 16oz Sugarcane bowls, a product we specifically market for use with hot or oily foods. The increased rigidity of our biodegradable products is well suited to outdoor events, or where more substantial servings are anticipated. Regular disposable paper plates will bend and distort under the weight of a Christmas pudding portion whereas our Sugarcane bowls are far sturdier and will retain their original shape.

Our biodegradable range consists of the following product types:

  • Round plates (6-10”)
  • Square plates (15-26cm)
  • Bowls (12-16oz)
  • Food boxes (For Burgers / Fish + Chips)
  • Compartment containers

As Heston Blumenthal so aptly demonstrated; these are a fantastic disposable solution for outdoor catering, available in a range of sizes and pack configurations to suit most requirements.

Biodegradable Tableware

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Introducing our new range of Biodegradable Tableware, this consists of Biodegradable plates, bowls, food containers and straws. The range is manufactured from 100% natural and renewable sugarcane fibre, a resource which would not otherwise be utilised. This means that our sugarcane products are very environmentally friendly.

Unlike traditional paper plates, which feature a wax coating, sugarcane products are completely compostable. A sugarcane product will completely decompose in soil within 180 days or 14 days in water, meaning they can be ethically disposed of through regular household waste, a commercial disposal facility or garden composting container.

In addition to the environmental advantages; sugarcane based products are more rigid than their paper counterparts, making them suitable for greasy/oily foods and for use in microwaves.
